Coming to SkyView HDX
IFR GPS Navigation

Dynon is excited to announce the development of a revolutionary leap forward for the light general aviation market: integrated IFR GPS navigation for the industry-leading SkyView HDX avionics system. This capability is being developed for simultaneous release across both Dynon Certified and experimental SkyView HDX product lines.

Ultimate Panel Flexibility & Lower Cost of Ownership

For existing SkyView HDX owners, the upgrade path will be incredibly simple. The underlying IFR capability will be delivered by a new, remote-mounted IFR module, bringing the capability into SkyView's on-screen flight planner. This solution utilizes the same proven modular architecture found across the existing SkyView product family and mounts completely behind the instrument panel. This leaves radio stacks perfectly clean, creating space for larger displays, additional radios, or storage.

Key Product Highlights:

  • Full IFR Capabilities, including LPV Approaches: Supports RNAV approaches down to LPV minimums, providing both horizontal and vertical guidance.
  • Zero Panel Space Required: Remote-mounted module keeps the radio stack wide open, allowing for cleaner panels and more flexible aircraft design.
  • Intuitive Next-Gen Flight Planner: A clean sheet design built to handle IFR and VFR scenarios seamlessly. Easily load departures, arrivals, and approaches with ease, eliminating the need for complex legacy training courses.
  • MOSAIC-Ready Integration: Designed perfectly for the next generation of aircraft. The new MOSAIC regulations now arriving open the door for IFR operations in Light Sport Aircraft. Dynon’s integrated navigation will provide a critical, space-saving solution for these airframes, allowing manufacturers and builders to deliver full-functionality IFR aircraft without traditional panel-stack penalties.
  • Seamless Autopilot Integration: Fully couples to the Dynon autopilot for rock-solid, hands-off approach flying.
  • Future-Proof Protection: Allows pilots to purchase and install a SkyView HDX system today and add full IFR capability as soon as certification is finalized.

Simplicity by Design: Redefined Flight Planning

Beyond the hardware and integration breakthrough, Dynon will introduce a completely redesigned, ultra-intuitive flight planning interface built directly into the SkyView HDX software. While most IFR navigators often feel like operating decades-old Flight Management Systems (FMS) that require specialized training courses just to enter a route, Dynon's next-gen flight planner brings modern simplicity to the cockpit.

The flight planner seamlessly handles both VFR and complex IFR scenarios with effortless ease, serving as a steadfast ally in the cockpit that simplifies even the most demanding flight phases. Pilots will intuitively load departures, arrivals, and approaches using clear, visual workflows, entirely eliminating the steep learning curves historically associated with instrument flight transitions.

Dynon IFR Frequently Asked Questions

Product Overview

We are announcing a new, built-in IFR GPS navigation capability currently in development for the SkyView HDX system. Once released, this system will integrate your navigation, flight planning, and approach guidance into the SkyView HDX system you already trust, eliminating the need for extra avionics hardware that occupies valuable panel space.

To enable IFR navigation, customers will simply add a new remote-mounted module and antenna. This hardware integrates into the SkyView HDX system using the same modular architecture as other SkyView components. Once installed with the latest no-cost SkyView software update, the capability will be unlocked. Customers will also need a current IFR aviation database - available for purchase/subscription, and optionally plates and charts (already available) if so desired.

No! This IFR GPS capability will be available on all SkyView HDX displays, when equipped with a new hardware module.

(Note: Legacy SkyView Classic and Touch systems are not compatible. However Dynon offers competitive display upgrade programs for those pilots).

None. Because the module mounts completely behind the panel and the software integrates directly into your existing SkyView HDX screen, you do not need to cut any new holes or give up any radio stack real estate.

Capabilities & Integration

All RNAV approaches. SIDs, STARs, you name it. The system will support full LPV (Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance), sometimes called “WAAS” approaches, giving you vertical and lateral guidance down to IFR minimums. It brings the advanced capabilities pilots expect from a dedicated IFR GPS directly into SkyView.

Yes, absolutely. The internal IFR navigator will fully integrate with the Dynon autopilot system to fly hands-off LPV approaches seamlessly all the way down to the runway environment.

While SkyView HDX is already a robust primary flight instrument suite for IFR operations, pilots currently require a separate, external navigator to handle certified IFR navigation. This upcoming new capability will change that by integrating full, certified IFR navigation directly into the SkyView HDX system. By adding a remote-mounted module and antenna, your SkyView HDX becomes your primary navigator for both VFR and IFR. This eliminates the need for a separate, radio-stack-mounted navigator, significantly reducing weight, wiring complexity, and panel clutter while delivering a seamless, integrated flight planning and guidance experience.

No. Unlike third-party navigators that require an additional ARINC adapter, Dynon’s IFR navigation solution is integrated, saving you money, weight, and wiring complexity.

Certification, Pricing, & Logistics

We are actively working through the formal FAA certification process. The system is being engineered to be a fully compliant, certified IFR solution for both experimental and type-certificated aircraft. It is not currently approved for IFR flight, and will not be until our product and certification programs are successfully completed.

We are currently engaged in the formal certification process with the FAA to ensure full compliance for both experimental and type-certificated aircraft. We are keeping the specific regulatory and technical details confidential while this program is in progress. Upon successful completion of our product and certification programs, this will be a fully approved, legal solution.

Final pricing will be announced closer to the formal shipping date. However, true to Dynon’s DNA, the solution will be priced aggressively to deliver unprecedented value. By eliminating the need for expensive panel-mounted boxes, complex wiring bundles, and separate adapters, the total cost to add full IFR capability to your panel will be a fraction of traditional legacy options.

The system will utilize a commercial data subscription to keep your comprehensive aviation data - including IFR information - current. IFR charts and plates remain available from existing partners.

Advanced flight testing, and compliance/certification projects are actively moving forward. We are not publishing a predicted release date at this time.

Reliability and safety are fundamental to our architecture. While we are not yet ready to share the technical specifics, you can expect the same level of built-in redundancy and fail-safe integration that defines our entire avionics ecosystem.

It’s true that we normally prefer to wait until a product is completely ready to ship before announcing it. However, a major regulatory shift and our commitment to protecting our builders' projects made sharing this roadmap early the right choice for two primary reasons:

The MOSAIC Transition: With the new MOSAIC regulations taking effect this July, the Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) market is opening the door to legal IFR operations. Aircraft manufacturers and builders are actively finalizing their avionics suites for these aircraft now. By sharing this breakthrough today, we can give them an elegant, space-saving option that fits within the tight weight and panel constraints typical of modern light aircraft, allowing them to design their new panels without traditional IFR radio-stack penalties.

Future-Proofing Your Panel: Designing and building an aircraft panel is a long-term investment, and pilots often hesitate out of fear that the technology they buy today will be obsolete tomorrow. We want to give you the absolute confidence to purchase and install a SkyView HDX system today, knowing it is a safe, premium investment with an exciting IFR roadmap ahead. Because this new capability integrates natively with our current display line, you can build or install your panel now, knowing you have a friction-free upgrade path for tomorrow that won't require a new display hardware iteration or any physical panel modifications.
